Are we having fun yet?

Do you find yourself asking that question over the Summer holidays?

It starts out as hazy, lazy days in the sun. But before you know it, the vacation becomes a frantic, chaotic search for something new to keep them happy.

Yep, I’ve been there.

I’m all for keeping things relaxed, but when you start hearing cries of “I’m bored” or “he started it” it’s time to take control.

These are my top five tips for avoiding a Summer of insanity:

Plan Ahead

Even if you’re having a pyjama day, watching movies and vegging on the couch, make a big deal of it to the kids.

Discuss how to make it a fun adventure. Build a den in the living room, lay out a picnic for lunch, take turns to choose a favourite movie, or make cupcakes to eat for dessert. Children find wonder in the smallest things and drawing up a timetable of how the day’s going to go and all the fun things you can do will have them almost too excited to sleep the night before.

Get Outdoors

For every day you spend indoors, make an effort to have a day out, either at the local park or walking in the countryside. Fresh air and exercise will tire them out and make them better behaved when you get home (or that’s the theory). It doesn’t have to be an expensive activity. Skimming stones in a stream or playing on the swings makes kids just as happy as any expensive visitor attraction.

Making ice lollies with our #StressFreeHoliday kit

Keep stock

For rainy days when you need to come up with new activities, make sure you keep a craft box, a dressing up box, a cookery box filled with goodies to keep everyone amused. Loom bands are a craze which can provide hours of fun.

Learn something new

They might not be at school, but that doesn’t mean they can’t learn a new skill – a fun one of course. Whether it’s teaching them to bake cakes, or ride a bike, or signing them up for a block of lessons at a dry ski slope, make it a memorable Summer they can look back on and say “that was the year I learned to….”

Pack them off

Don’t feel guilty about making some time for them to spend away from you. Whether it’s visiting grandparents, having a playdate or sleepover at a friend’s house (as long as you reciprocate) or attending a holiday activities club, you can’t expect to be in each other’s company 24/7 without tears and tantrums. So give yourselves a break from each other now and then. Let somebody else take the strain.

Hopefully these tips will have helped.

But I’ve also got a competition prize which will take some of the stress out of your holiday…..
